What is tallow, and why do you use it in skincare products?
Tallow is simply rendered fat from grass fed beef. It might sound unusual if you’re new to it, but tallow has a long history in skincare because its composition is very similar to the natural oils (sebum) our own skin produces. This means it’s highly compatible with our skin – tallow absorbs easily and delivers fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K to nourish and repair. We use tallow as a base in many of our products because it’s an excellent moisturizer (great for dry, cracked skin), it’s gentle and non-irritating (suitable even for sensitive skin or eczema), and it’s a sustainable choice – we’re utilizing a natural ingredient that would otherwise be wasted. Plus, we render and purify the tallow right on our farm, so we can ensure its quality. The result is rich, creamy skincare that is 100% natural and incredibly effective. Don’t worry – our tallow balms won’t make you smell like a steak! Properly rendered tallow is odorless; any scent in our products comes from the lovely essential oils we add.
Are your products really all-natural and free from chemicals?
Absolutely. When we say all-natural, we truly mean it. Every ingredient we use is something you can recognize – things like beef tallow, coconut oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, and essential oils from plants. You won’t find parabens, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic dyes or artificial fragrances in any Double R Farm product. We don’t use chemical preservatives either; instead we rely on vitamin E and the inherent stability of oils/butters to keep products fresh. Our goal is to provide skincare that is as close to nature as possible, formulated in a way that your skin understands and loves. We often say our ingredient lists read more like a kitchen recipe than a chemistry lab. The only “chemistry” happening is the natural kind – for example, the way calendula infuses its healing properties into oil. By keeping our formulations clean and simple, we ensure that you’re not putting anything on your body that we wouldn’t put on ours or our kids’. If you have specific allergy concerns, always check our product ingredient lists, but you can rest easy knowing there are no hidden nasties.
I have sensitive skin (or a specific condition like eczema/acne). Can I use your products?
Many customers with sensitive or problem-prone skin find our products to be a welcome relief. We intentionally avoid common irritants and use gentle, nourishing ingredients suited for all skin types. For example, our Face Moisturizer contains just tallow, jojoba, and a bit of lavender and frankincense – no irritating alcohols or acids – making it great for sensitive or even eczema-prone skin. Tallow in particular is known to be non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and calming for conditions like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea. That said, everyone’s skin is unique. We recommend doing a small patch test when trying any new skincare product: apply a little bit to a small area of skin and wait 24 hours to see if you have any reaction. It’s very rare, but if you find you’re sensitive to an essential oil in a product (for instance, a few folks can’t tolerate lavender or peppermint on their skin), discontinue use. The good news is, we also accept custom requests – if you know you’re allergic or sensitive to an ingredient, reach out to us. Often we can make you a special batch without that ingredient or suggest an alternative product. Our mission is to help you find something that truly works for you, so we’re happy to work with your individual needs.
How should I store my tallow balms and other products? Do they expire?
Our products are quite stable thanks to the natural preservatives (like vitamin E and certain essential oils) and the absence of water in most formulas. We suggest storing them in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight – a cabinet or drawer is perfect. Tallow-based products can soften or even melt in high heat (just like a coconut oil might), so if your room gets very warm, you might notice a balm becoming softer. That’s okay – just give it a stir and pop it in the fridge for a short while to firm it back up. On the flip side, in very cold conditions, tallow balms can harden; simply warm a bit between your fingers and it will melt nicely. As for shelf life, for balms, butters, and oils, we recommend using them within about 12 months for maximum freshness and potency. They may very well last longer (we’ve had jars last over a year and still be fine), but the natural scents might fade over time. Our scrubs are best used within 6-8 months, as sugar can harden if not sealed well – always keep the lid on tight. And our sprays (like Magnesium Spray) should also be fine for about a year. You’ll know a product is past its prime if it develops an “off” smell or changes color/texture significantly. When in doubt, shoot us a message. The bottom line: no fancy preservatives means a slightly shorter shelf life, but also means you’re not putting weird chemicals on your body. We make our batches small and frequent so you always receive products with plenty of life left in them.

Returns and Exchange

Your satisfaction is incredibly important to us. We stand behind our products 100%, because we use them ourselves every day. However, due to the small-batch, natural nature of our skincare products (and for sanitary reasons), we do have a few guidelines on returns and exchanges. Here’s our plain-and-simple policy:

If there’s an issue with your order or a product arrives damaged or defective, we will make it right – period. Whether a jar cracked in transit or you received the wrong item, just let us know as soon as possible (a quick photo emailed to us of the problem helps, too). We’ll gladly send a replacement or issue a refund, whichever you prefer. You shouldn’t have to pay for our mistakes or for postal mishaps – that’s on us.

For returns or exchanges due to other reasons (for example, if you decided you ordered the wrong item or it just doesn’t suit you), we accept returns on unopened, unused products within 30 days of delivery. Send us a message to authorize the return, and ensure the item is securely packaged when you send it back. Once we receive it in good condition, we’ll process a refund to your original payment method (minus any shipping costs, if applicable). We’re a small business, so we appreciate your understanding that we can’t resell returned skincare items; that’s why we can only take it back if unopened.

For opened/used products: in general, we cannot accept returns if a product has been substantially used, simply because we can’t reuse or resell it and have to discard it. That said, we truly want you to love what you ordered. If you gave something a try and it just didn’t work for you, please reach out to us anyway. We might be able to offer an exchange or suggest an alternative product. In some cases, we’ve provided a discount on a different item to make up for it. Our goal is not to be stingy with a policy, but to ensure fairness for both you and us. Talk to us – we’ll find a friendly solution.

Please note that because our products are handmade with natural ingredients, there may be slight variations from batch to batch (for example, one batch of balm might be a touch firmer or a shade yellower than another). These aren’t defects, but the charming quirks of real handcrafted goods. We hope you embrace those variations as part of the beauty of artisanal products. If you ever suspect something truly isn’t right (say, a balm separated or something grew mold, which is highly unlikely within shelf life), again, let us know and we’ll address it.

In summary: we want you to be happy. If you’re not, we’ll do our best to fix it. Just keep in mind the nature of what we sell – small batch, made by human hands, with safety seals – and why we handle returns the way we do. And of course, if you have any questions about an item before you purchase – whether about scent, texture, ingredients, anything – we encourage you to reach out. We can often guide you to the product that will suit you best, possibly avoiding the need for a return altogether.

Thank you for understanding and for giving our farm-made skincare a try. We value your business and trust immensely, and we’ll always treat you with the same honesty and care that we put into our products.
